Cashing in the Paul Ranger Lottery Ticket
If there's a silver-lining to Jake Gadiner's "concussion", it's that the Leafs are getting a better look at Paul Ranger.
Gardiner left a game on December 8 against Rochester after receiving a blindside hit from Kevin Porter, who was penalized for the hit, and hasn't played since.

How a New CBA Affects a Roberto Luongo Trade
A lockout hasn't stopped the endless Roberto Luongo rumours.
Last week, Sportsnet's John Shannon reported that there is an agreement between Toronto and Vancouver that would send the 33-year-old netminder to the Leafs once the lockout ends. Apparently Brian Burke and Mike Gillis (who both denied Shannon's report) have been in communication for a long time, ever since the Canucks reportedly asked for Tyler Bozak, Jake Gardiner, Matt Frattin, and a first-round pick at June's entry draft. That asking price was obviously a non-starter for the Leafs, but a deal surrounding Bozak is supposedly very much alive.
However, with the owners' latest CBA proposal, which would stick teams who sign a player for more than five years with that player's cap hit upon retirement, there is speculation in some corners that the price just went up.

The Justin Schultz Sweepstakes
Justin Schultz is a former second-round pick of the
Anaheim Ducks and has the type of potential that makes scouts drool. When teams get a player with Schultz's skill they tend to hold tight. But this summer Schultz could hit unrestricted free agency before playing his first NHL
game.
Thanks to a loophole in the CBA, the young defenceman can become an unrestricted free agent this summer, as he is a college player yet to sign an NHL contract four years after being drafted. All Schultz has to do is walk away from his senior year at Wisconsin and he will be able to choose where he plays in 2012-13.

The Non-Dilemma
The Leafs have themselves a problem. It's a nice problem, admittedly,
but a problem nonetheless. They have too many defencemen. More
importantly, one of those defencemen, Jake Gardiner, not seen as a
serious contender to make the team before camp, is playing better than
most of the players above him on the depth chart.
The Leafs must get Jake Gardiner in their line-up. He's so talented that his inclusion alone will propel the Leafs out of their playoffless hell. Brian Burke needs to do it by any means necessary: trade, demotion, kidnapping Mike Komisarek.
Or they should ignore the irrational cries of their fan-base and do what's best for their prospects and, more importantly, their organization.

Farewell, Francois
![]() |
I'll remember you for this and not the egregious giveaways. |
Gone is the much maligned Francois Beauchemin. In his place is Joffrey Lupul, probably best known for being traded for Chris Pronger on two separate occasions. The Leafs also get former first round pick Jake Gardiner and a conditional fourth round pick. According to Pierre LeBrun, the pick is a fourth rounder if Lupul plays 40 games for the Leafs next season, if not, it becomes a sixth round pick.
This is a pretty good trade for both the Anaheim Ducks and the Toronto Maple Leafs.
